Scuttlebutt – Puffed Rice & Toasted Sesame

The scuttlebutt was a barrel of water on a ship’s deck, ‘scuttled,’ or cut open, so sailors could get a drink. Like the modern day water cooler, the scuttlebutt was a place to gather around and exchange the latest rumors and gossip. Rumor has it, crispy puffed rice has never tasted better than when paired with toasted sesame and folded into rich milk chocolate.

Ingredients: single origin Venezuelan milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, cocoa liquor, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), organic puffed rice & organic sesame seeds.

Slop Chest – Graham Cracker & Marshmallow

The slop chest was where the good stuff was kept on ocean voyages – boots, clothing, tobacco, rum, and other personal necessities. It was a sort of general store for the crew to purchase goods while at sea. Campfires are generally discouraged on ships’ decks, but the s’mores inspired bar, with locally made marshmallows and graham crackers and silky dark chocolate, would make a fine addition to any slop chest.

Ingredients: single origin Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate (cocoa liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), graham crackers (organic whole wheat flour, organic wheat flour, organic cane sugar, organic expeller-pressed sunflower oil, organic invert cane syrup, calcium carbonate, sea salt, leavening, natural flavors, mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E to protect flavor), handmade marshmallows (organic sugar, corn syrup, Maine honey, gelatin, vanilla extract).

Hawsepiper – Maine Potato Chip & Toasted Coconut

Hawsepiper was the name given to those merchant mariners who worked their way up the ranks from the humblest beginnings. The nickname alludes to one climbing up the hawsepipe – the channel through the ships’ bow where the anchor chain passes. This bar proudly salutes the humble Maine potato chip, which has rightfully risen to a place of respect among munchies, paired with toasted coconut and blended into single origin milk chocolate.

Ingredients: single origin Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate (cocoa liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), organic coconut, Maine potato chips (Maine potatoes, corn oil, canola oil, salt).

Tight Lines – Peanut & Pretzel

You don’t wish an angler good luck – you wish for tight lines… In other words, that their bait will entice some hungry fish who are willing to stretch the lines tight and bend the rod over as the swim against the buzzing reel. Most fishermen we know would chase after this classic combo of peanuts and pretzels, as proven by their ever-present appearance on bar tops up and down the coast. Adding delicious darn chocolate to the mix can’t hurt.

Ingredients: single origin Venezuelan bittersweet chocolate (cocoa liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), roasted organic peanuts, pretzels (wheat flour, sunflower oil, salt, leavening, yeast).

Life in New England is sustained by the ocean. Our wildlife, farms and fishermen depend on the sea to thrive, and we at LeRoux feel deeply connected to the ocean, which provides us with both nourishment and joy. To do our small part in ensuring the health and conservation of this great sea that surrounds us, we are giving a portion of the proceeds from this chocolate bar to the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, which is dedicated to safeguarding New England’s waters.
